The True Size of Africa

The term “Immappancy” describes insufficient geographical knowledge. According to Kai Krause, it should be fought, just like illiteracy. He writes:

A survey with random American schoolkids let them guess the population and land area of their country. Not entirely unexpected, but still rather unsettling, the majority chose “1-2 billion” and “largest country in the world”, respectively.

This problem exists all over the world, and Kai suspects the use of distorting mapping projections as a cause.
In his graphic, he shows us the true size of Africa, which is NOT the size of Greenland, as the Mercator Projection suggests, for example (it's the one everyone knows from Google Maps). We can easily see that it has the same area as many other large coutries combined.

Eine Umfrage unter zufällig gewählten Amerikanisches Schülern sollte deren Wissen über die Einwohnerzahl und Fläche ihres Landes prüfen. Nicht ganz unerwartet, aber dennoch erschütternd waren die Schätzungen auf „1 bis 2 Milliarden“ bzw. „größtes Land der Welt“.

Ähnliche Fehleinschätzungen stellte man auch in anderen Teilen der Welt fest. Kai vermutet, dass die Verwendung von Karten mit verzerrenden Maßstäben die Ursache ist.
Seine Grafik zeigt die wahre Größe Afrikas; sie entspricht nicht der Größe Grönlands, wie es nämlich auf den oft verwendeten Karten mit Mercator-Projektion der Fall ist (bekannt aus Google Maps &co.). Man erkennt schnell, dass der Kontinent die kombinierte Fläche einiger anderer großer Länder besitzt.
